Save money, water and time while keeping your lawn green
When it comes to saving water and money, high-efficiency shower heads and low-flush toilets have become the norm for homeowners. But did you know technology and innovation has also been developed to significantly save on outdoor water use while still keeping lawns and landscapes healthy? A rain or soil sensor is a simple addition to your already installed sprinkler system with a big payoff for both the environment and your pocketbook. And if you’re just installing a home sprinkler system, consider a sensor now part of your non-negotiables list.
Toro sensors take in information about the environment or soil conditions and can reduce water usage while keeping your grass just as green. Consider the following products to upgrade your home sprinkler system while reducing your water bill.
Toro Wired RainSensor with Freeze Detection
If you’re looking for a simple sensor that ensures the job gets done, this is for you. With multiple set-points to adjust rain sensitivity plus maintenance-free sensing discs, this sensor provides the reliability and peace of mind you’re looking for to adjust your system’s operation when it rains or freezes.
This sensor is compatible with all Toro and other manufacturers’ controllers that are designed to accept a sensor device, making it easy to integrate into your existing system. The hygroscopic discs are maintenance-free, with adjustable rain shut-off indexes at 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2” and 3/4” of rain. This sensor also automatically suspends irrigation when the temperature drops below 37° F, saving piping and irrigation components. With 25 feet of UV-resistant cable, you have flexibility with where you install this sensor, and there are three easy options to install: a quick clip gutter bracket, a wall mount or a conduit adapter. This sensor meets legislative standards in states and municipalities with mandates. Be sure to check with your local water agency for potential rebates.
Toro Precision™ Series Soil Sensor
Bring the technology the pros use to your home lawn with Toro’s Precision™ Soil Sensor. This sensor reduces water waste and saves you money by continuously measuring moisture levels in the soil and determining when to allow your controller to water, maximizing the efficiency of your irrigation system. Communication between the sensor probe and receiver is completely wireless with a range of 500 feet, so installation is quick and easy with no digging required. The sensor also automatically detects the soil type and adjusts all calculations accordingly.
The Precision Series Soil Sensor works with nearly all irrigation controllers (including other brands) and when an automatic watering is scheduled to start, the system will only run if the soil moisture has dropped below the minimum moisture setting, and the air temperature is favorable for watering. This prevents overwatering all while saving water and reducing your bill.
The sensor simply plugs into the soil – so there’s no holes to dig or wires to bury. All you’ll need to complete the installation is a small Phillips screwdriver, three AA alkaline batteries and a bit of do-it-yourself enthusiasm. Keep in mind that this soil sensor cannot improve or remedy a sprinkler system that’s improperly designed, installed or maintained. So, to gain the maximum benefit, make sure your automatic sprinkler system is in good working order.
