Hot Flower Picks for 2006
by
Kathleen Hennessy
When it comes to choosing a great new plant to put in your garden, opinions are like Hosta, everyone has one or two. Here are a few new, and some not-so-new, varieties that you'll want to add to your garden this season.
‘Sunrise’ Coneflower
The sunny yellow flowers of this sun-loving perennial reach up to five inches across. Plants grow up to 36-inches making it striking in the garden and great as a cut flower. Zones 4-9.
‘Origami’ Columbine
I first fell in love with this columbine variety two years ago at the California Pack Trials industry trade show. It’s now widely available across the country. The beautiful blooms of this perennial come in many colors including white, yellow, blue, red and pink. Origami blooms longer than other columbine varieties. A must have in every flower garden. Winter hardy to Zone 3.
‘Sunrise Sunset’ Easy Elegance® Rose
Roses are now easier than ever to grow, if you choose the right variety. Breeding advances have made the Easy Elegance® line the one to choose for easy care, great color choices and disease resistance. Sunrise Sunset performs well in just about any area of the country. Zones 4-9.
‘Million Bells® ’ Calibrachoa
Million Bells® are one of my favorite plants for container gardens. Think of Million Bells as a miniature petunia, spilling out in a mass of color. They bloom all season long with beautiful color choices including cherry pink, yellow, red and terra cotta.
‘Blushing Bride’, Endless Summer® Hydrangea
Don't wait until June to get a look at this Bride. The sister to The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea® will be available in limited quantities this spring, and only at independent garden centers. Stunning white blooms gradually mature to a subtle, pink blush. Since this is a reblooming variety of hydrangea, it is a great flower for cutting.
‘Easy Wave® ’ Petunias
Speaking of petunias if you're confused by all the spreading varieties, just look for Easy Wave®. This variety is a little more mounded than the other Wave types, making it a great container or hanging basket plant. It's fast growing and spreads up to three feet.
