Managing Lawn Pests

Pesticide Safety

  1. Use the least toxic, most target-specific chemical.
  2. Purchase the smallest amount needed to do the job.
  3. Don't mix more spray than you need--and stick to target areas only.
  4. Read the label carefully, and follow all recommendations precisely.
  5. Wear protective clothing and gear as directed.
  6. Wear gloves when using a sprayer and wash well afterward.
  7. Do not use pesticides if rain is forecast or if it is windy.
  8. Launder pesticide-contaminated clothing separately.
  9. Keep leftover pesticides away from children and pets.
  10. Keep leftover chemicals in their original containers.
  11. Call the National Pesticide Telecommunications Network (1-800-858-7378) for more information, or check out its website at http:/npic.orst.edu.
